I Tried To Make A Viral TikTok Filter

Have you ever wondered how those popular face filters on social media are made? In a recent video, I decided to try my hand at creating my own custom AR face filter for Instagram and TikTok. Face filters have been a hit on platforms like Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok, and I wanted to see if I could create something that people would enjoy using. With the help of Sophie Cherniak from the augmented reality makeup company MaCer, we set out to design and build our own Halloween-inspired filters.

The Process

In order to create our filters, we had to first come up with several Halloween-themed ideas. We decided on five different looks: an alien, a snow queen, a devil, a spiderweb eyeliner, and bats. Each look had its own unique elements and animations, such as rotating orbs for the alien and disappearing bats for the bat filter.

Once we finalized our designs, Sophie's team started building the filters using software like Metasparc for Instagram and Effect House for TikTok. They created both 2D and 3D elements for each filter and incorporated animations where necessary. For example, the rotating orbs for the alien filter were made using 3D animation software.

The Results

After a few weeks of development, we received the test links for our filters and gave them a try. We were excited to see how they turned out and were impressed with the final results. The filters worked smoothly on both Instagram and TikTok, with the animations and effects being applied correctly to the user's face.
