AI chatbot 'Billie' takes over at IKEA

News & Politics

Introduction

IKEA has introduced its own AI chatbot called Billy, named after one of the company's most iconic bookshelves. The new software is designed to manage routine customer inquiries, helping the Swedish furniture giant to efficiently handle a total of 47 million inquiries that would have otherwise gone to call centers over the past two years.

Despite this technological advancement, IKEA assures that there will not be any job losses as a result of the implementation of Billy. Instead, the company is retraining call center employees to transition into roles as interior design advisors. Since 2021, around 8,500 workers have successfully made this shift as IKEA expands its interior design services in the US and UK, following earlier launches in other countries.

Customers can now pay for customized interior design advice through video calls, allowing them to order detailed floor plans and additional design aids. This innovative approach has proven lucrative, with sales from these products and services reaching $ 1.4 billion in the 2022 financial year.

By investing in digital services, IKEA is looking to compete more effectively with rivals like Wayfair, which has introduced its own in-store digital design studio. For the time being, it seems that the workforce at IKEA can rest assured, as the company emphasizes its commitment to reskill employees and create new roles rather than replace them with automation.
