BEST AI TOOLS FOR SOP WRITING?| AI tools for Statement of Purpose | Study Abroad

Education

Introduction

If you're planning to study abroad, you will definitely have to write a Statement of Purpose (SOP). With so many AI tools in the market, you might be wondering which AI tools are good for writing a quality SOP, to what extent AI usage is allowed, and whether universities are using AI checkers to determine if an SOP is AI-generated. This article aims to address these questions and guide you on how to effectively use AI tools for your SOP writing.

Hi everyone, I am Neha Agrawal, the founder of VisUp. On this channel, I make videos on studying abroad, job readiness, research mastery, and communication skills—essentially all those areas where you need to become wiser to succeed in your career. If any of these topics are relevant to you, you can subscribe to this channel. Now, let's talk about the best AI tools for SOP writing.

When it comes to SOP writing, you can use basic tools like ChatGPT. However, there are AI tools specifically designed for SOP writing, such as Loom, Tootla, eSopi, CareerSky, and GradGPT. Students commonly use these platforms in two ways:

  1. Generating Entire SOPs: Input key details like research projects, work experiences, university, and program, then let the AI tool generate the entire SOP.
  2. Rephrasing Content: Write the SOP yourself and then use the AI tool to rephrase the content paragraph by paragraph to make it more professional.

Many students think that the second way should be absolutely fine because they have written the content themselves, reducing the chance of it being flagged as plagiarized. However, even this constitutes AI-generated content. Each of us has a unique writing style, and when you have your SOP rewritten by an AI tool, it may become polished but also computerized or mechanical.

Last season, I reviewed close to 500 SOPs and could tell if a student had written the SOP themselves or had used an AI tool. The admissions committee, with their extensive experience, will easily be able to detect AI-generated content, whether they use an AI checker or not.

Extent of AI Usage and Safe AI Tools

Utilize AI tools only for language and grammar correction. Don't ask these AI tools to rephrase a sentence because the minute it does, it's considered AI-generated content. Some of the best AI tools available for language and grammar checks are Grammarly, QuillBot, Trinka, and Paperpal.

To use these tools, upload your SOP on the platform and ask it to check language and grammar, or download their plugin or extension. This ensures your SOP is in your own voice, free of grammatical errors, and not AI-generated.

AI Checkers and Their Reliability

Universities are using AI checkers to determine if an SOP is AI generated. Some of my students received emails last year stating their SOPs were rejected due to high AI-generated content. This can negatively impact your application.

Don't rely on online AI checkers as they are not very reliable and may falsely flag your SOP as AI-generated. Instead, write your SOP yourself and use human reviewers for feedback.
