Introduction
Our modern civilization has achieved remarkable things in almost every imaginable area of human endeavor. What lessons can the past teach us about the essential nature of civilization and the decisions that have caused other civilizations to collapse or endure? These are the questions that great history can help us answer. I am Craig Benjamin, Professor of History at Grand Valley State University.
In this course, we will chart the monumental rise of civilization from the earliest days of humanity to the present and then try to imagine what the future might hold. We will compare the development of civilizations as diverse as those of Mesopotamia, the Mediterranean, Africa, the Indus Valley, and the Eurasian steppe. We will explore what they had in common and why innovation occurred where it did.
You will learn about the critical role that nomadic peoples played in linking the great sacred civilizations of the world with each other and the unexpected importance of conflict and crises in producing some of civilization's most creative solutions. We will explore a surprising pattern of development that all civilizations share with the natural world and the cosmos itself. Today, more than ever, it is clear that the fate of our civilization is in our hands.
Join me for a comprehensive look at its origins and the reasons why we are not offended. Hope the great history of civilizations for it now.
