BRUTALLY HONEST | Trans-Atlantic ECONOMY on Icelandair Boeing 737 MAX 8 Orlando - Keflavík - Berlin!

Travel & Events

Introduction

In the world of airlines, there exists a clear spectrum, ranging from low-cost carriers that offer bare-bones service to full-service airlines that provide a comprehensive travel experience. On one end, low-cost airlines typically charge for every extra, from inflight entertainment to baggage. On the opposite side are full-service carriers that offer everything from checked luggage to complimentary snacks and beverages. In the middle of this spectrum is Icelandair, which operates a hybrid business model, delivering a mix of both services.

In this article, we dive deep into Icelandair's transatlantic economy class experience, explore why their unique model works, and see what travelers can expect.

The Journey Begins: Orlando to Keflavík

Our journey commenced at the newly constructed Concourse C of Orlando International Airport. This impressive terminal, opened in 2022 at the cost of nearly $ 3 billion, demonstrates the capability of American airports to create sophisticated and functional spaces. The check-in process at Icelandair was seamless. As my ticket included a checked bag and a carry-on, I was good to go. Notably, Icelandair allows a 10 kg carry-on, even for the cheapest economy tickets.

Boarding proceeded on time, and soon we found ourselves aboard Tango Fox India Charlie Romeo, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 that joined Icelandair's fleet in 2021. Icelandair operates a mix of the MAX 8 and MAX 9, alongside a few Boeing 757s and 767s being phased out for the new Airbus A321 NEOs.

Once on board, passengers noticed some of the upgraded features of the 737 MAX series, including larger overhead bins, which were reminiscent of Boeing's 787 Dreamliner.

The Economy Class Cabin

The economy cabin contained three rows of extra legroom seats followed by regular economy seating. My seat was comfortable, providing surprising legroom for someone of my height (180 cm). The seating arrangement offered amenities such as adjustable headrests, personal air vents, and reading lights, although there were no dedicated coat hooks or universal power outlets—just USB ports.

Though Icelandair isn't a member of any airline alliance, they have partnerships with JetBlue and Alaska Airlines, allowing for shared mileage and flight itineraries.

In-Flight Entertainment and Dining

Icelandair employed the Saffron Ra entertainment system, featuring personal touchscreens with a selection of movies, TV, and music. Wi-Fi is available for purchase as well. In terms of onboard meals, passengers should be prepared to pay as there are no complimentary meals or snacks. Although beverages like soda, coffee, and juice are complimentary, the food offerings include a range of items for sale, including a $ 24 three-course meal, which I opted for on this flight. The lasagna was surprisingly delicious but at a premium price.

On the plus side, Icelandair does provide free meals for children under 11 if requested in advance, a friendly gesture that few airlines offer.

Arriving in Iceland and Beyond

After a restful portion of my journey, we arrived at Keflavík International Airport. An efficient transit process allows connections to European destinations without the hassle of going through security again.

Once in the airport, I experienced an unexpected twist: due to volcanic activity in the area, there was a disruption in hot water supply to the flight kitchen, leading to the refund of my pre-ordered sailor porridge. Instead, I grabbed a quick avocado toast at the airport café.

After a brief layover, we boarded the exact same aircraft for our onward flight to Berlin. Though there were no pillows or blankets on this leg, the service remained consistent, with complimentary drinks provided.

Overall, Icelandair’s blend of services positions it uniquely in the airline market. While not offering full-service amenities, they surpass typical low-cost options, ensuring passengers enjoy good legroom, free beverages, and an uncomplicated transit experience.

In conclusion, Icelandair represents a solid option for travelers heading to Iceland and beyond, catering primarily to those interested in holiday experiences combined with budget-conscious travel.
