Descript Tutorial: A Crash Course For Beginners (September 2024)
Education
Introduction
In this article, we will explore Descript, an innovative tool that revolutionizes video editing by allowing users to edit audio and video as if they were editing a text document. Whether you are a beginner or looking to refresh your skills, this crash course will guide you through the initial steps in Descript, using the interface, importing or recording video, and utilizing its AI features for seamless editing.
Getting Started with Descript
When you first open the Descript app, you’re greeted with the Drive View, where all your projects are listed. To start a new project, click the "New Project" button in the top right corner and select "Video Project" from the dropdown menu. You’ll be taken into a blank project where you can name your creation.
Before diving into the software, it's essential to note that I'm currently using the Creator Plan of Descript, which includes paid features. If you're using the free version, you might encounter some limitations, especially regarding AI functionalities. I am also on a Mac in light mode, so the appearance may slightly differ for Windows users, particularly with keyboard shortcuts.
Understanding the Interface
The interface is broken down into several sections:
- Scene Thumbnails (Top Left): Displays thumbnails for various scenes in your video.
- Transcript Area (Center): Where the automatically generated text for your audio or video appears.
- Canvas (Middle Right): Shows a visual representation of your video at any given moment.
- Property Bar (Far Right): Provides access to various project properties and AI tools.
Additional controls such as a settings dropdown, project name, and publish/export buttons can also be found here. As you begin work on your project, you will need audio or video content to edit, which can either be recorded directly in Descript or imported from your device.
Recording or Importing Video
Recording Your Video
To begin recording, press the “Record” button available in the main interface. This will prompt a recording window that allows you to select your camera and microphone. Once you press the record button, Descript will start the recording and automatically generate subtitles based on your audio once you finish.
Importing Existing Files
If you prefer to edit pre-recorded content, you can import video files by using the "Upload File" button. Select the desired video, and Descript will focus on transcribing the audio into text automatically. Specify the number of speakers, their names, and the language for accurate transcription.
Editing Audio and Video
Adjusting Sound Quality
After importing a video file, you should listen to the audio for quality checks. Access the timeline to view sound waves and make audio adjustments. If there’s excess silence at the start, you can trim it by clicking and dragging the clip boundary.
Descript offers a feature called Studio Sound, which improves audio quality by isolating voice and eliminating background noise. Adjust the percentage level for better results.
Color and Video Adjustments
Next, you can enhance video quality by adjusting properties like exposure, contrast, and saturation. The app allows users to manipulate the visual properties to achieve the desired look, and don’t forget to check the scaling of your video frame, especially if it’s intended for platforms like YouTube or TikTok.
Adding AI Features
Descript is packed with AI features to streamline editing:
- Edit for Clarity: This AI tool identifies unwanted segments of your audio, providing you options to delete or ignore them.
- Remove Filler Words: Automatically detects and allows you to remove filler words from your clips.
- Add Chapters: Automatically divides your video into chapters for easy navigation.
Publishing Your Project
Once you have finished editing, you can export your project using the Publish button. Decide whether you want to publish directly to a platform like YouTube or download the video to your computer. Descript offers several export options, including audio-only, GIFs, or subtitle files.
