DIGITAL SAT Math J.E.D.I. Training - Day 1 of 4 (Overview of SAT, DESMOS, and Formulas)
Education
Introduction
Welcome back, everyone, to another live stream from the Scaler Learning Channel! I am thrilled to kick off our new series: the Digital SAT J.E.D.I. training program. This structured training program is designed to prepare you for the upcoming October SAT through classes, practice tests, and plenty of resources. Let's dive right in!
Overview of the Program
If you're new to our community or didn't join our summer prep, we have a vibrant platform where students can connect, share their experiences, and access materials to aid in their SAT preparation. We're growing rapidly, and as of now, there are over 410 members! Each session in this J.E.D.I. training will be free, and we will have two lectures a week: one for math, led by me, and one for verbal, presented by the talented Dan Lurman from Columbia University.
Structure and Schedule
For those who participated in our August Prep, many have shared their positive results from practice tests. If you haven't taken a practice test yet, no worries! I will still maintain a structured test schedule to help establish a rhythm.
As we gear up for the October SAT, understanding how to study effectively and use additional resources like SAT Crash Course—which I highly recommend—will be beneficial. Use the code "SCALER" for a discount when purchasing their resources!
Importance of Fundamentals
The key takeaway from today is the importance of mastering math fundamentals and knowing how to navigate the SAT sections. Many students reported that the August math section felt challenging; thus, a solid grasp of critical concepts is vital.
We encourage you to participate actively in the training sessions, rewatch lectures if necessary, and collaborate with peers. Post your questions as they arise, as I believe in addressing each student's learning needs.
Understanding the Digital SAT
The digital SAT consists of two main sections: reading and writing, and math. Each section is adaptive; upon reaching a certain threshold of correct answers, students are presented with the more challenging questions. Importantly, there are no penalties for incorrect answers, so always attempt every question.
Test Format
- Total Duration: 2 hours and 14 minutes
- Reading and Writing: 27 questions each
- Math: 20 questions for each module
Students should not leave blanks since there's no deduction for incorrect answers.
Using DESMOS
Desmos, the online graphing calculator, is now permitted throughout the SAT, but reliance solely on this tool can be detrimental. While it's an excellent resource, understanding fundamental formulas is essential as more complex problems may arise that require deeper mathematical knowledge.
Essential Formulas
We will go through crucial math formulas students need to know, such as:
- Slope of a line
- Distance Formula
- Quadratic Formula
- Area and Circumference of a Circle
These formulas will be provided in reference sheets during the exam, but familiarity and comfort with applying them are crucial for success.
Conclusion
In conclusion, preparation is key to achieving a stellar SAT score. Participating in our training and accessing additional resources will help equip you with tips and tricks for tackling the SAT effectively. Remember, practice not only improves comprehension but also significantly boosts your confidence going into the exam day.
