    Introduction

Thinking about adding a smart thermostat to your home automation setup? Today, I'm going to replace my thermostat with the Ecobee3 smart Wi-Fi thermostat. My home has a special circumstance where I only have four wires connecting my existing thermostat to my mechanical closet. Therefore, in addition to the Ecobee3 setup and review, we'll also install the Power Extender Kit (PEK). Stay tuned!

Hi, I'm John Stone, the DIY smart home guy. If you watched my "Start in Your Smart Home" video, you'll remember that I mentioned energy savings as one of the five main categories of home automation. Many people choose to replace their thermostats early in their smart home journey because a properly configured smart thermostat can provide significant energy savings. According to the US Energy Information Administration, 40% of all energy consumption in 2015 went to heating and cooling. So, a smart thermostat is a must-have if you want to reduce your energy bill.

Most of the features of a smart thermostat can be achieved with a digital thermostat with scheduling capabilities. However, many people don't bother to set up schedules due to their complexity. In my case, I want the ability to control the temperature remotely, especially when I'm away from the house for a few days.

There are various smart thermostats available, including Nest, Honeywell, Ecobee, and others. Due to my home's pre-existing wiring condition, my options were limited. I have only four control wires between my existing thermostat and HVAC unit, which normally requires a C-wire. After some research, I settled on the Ecobee3.

    Unboxing and Features

The Ecobee3 package includes a smart programmable Wi-Fi thermostat and one remote sensor. There are other options too, such as a light version with no sensors and another with three sensors. The Power Extender Kit (PEK), located under the top panel, is used to install the Ecobee3 without the C-wire.

The remote sensor detects both temperature and motion. When used fully, it will calculate the average temperature between the thermostat and the sensors to balance the temperature in your house. The "follow me" feature averages the temperature only in rooms that recently detected motion.

    Installation

Before starting the installation, make sure to shut off the breaker and take clear pictures of your wiring for reference. Here’s a quick guide to the installation process:

    1. Install the PEK: Connect the wires to the PEK and the HVAC unit.
    2. Mount the Thermostat: Adjust the mounting plate, attach the wall plate if necessary, and deal with wire alignment.
    3. Wire Connections: Connect the thermostat wires to the corresponding terminals.
    4. Power On and Initial Setup: After powering on, follow the setup screen instructions to configure your system.

    Using the App

The Ecobee app offers a clean interface. Key functions include temperature sensor variances, scheduling zones, and comfort settings like home, away, and sleep. The interface allows for easy copying of schedules and full customizability.

Integration with Amazon Echo, Wink, and SmartThings

    1. Amazon Echo: Control temperature via voice commands. For example, “Alexa, set the thermostat to 75 degrees.”
    2. Wink Hub: Easily integrate and control the thermostat along with other smart devices.
    3. SmartThings: Similar integration capabilities are provided, allowing comprehensive control over the HVAC system.

    Portal Access

Ecobee offers a great portal that provides the same features as the app but on a larger screen, which some users may prefer for convenience.

    Conclusion

Installing the Ecobee3 smart Wi-Fi thermostat, along with the PEK, provides a smart solution for energy management. The addition of Amazon Echo integration and compatibility with major hubs like Wink and SmartThings makes this a versatile option for any smart home. The potential energy savings and comfort improvements make it worth the investment.
