Havina Vonreg Gentle Giant Ltd L3D Half-Scale Bust Review

The career of an Imperial pilot was one of the most dangerous jobs since their Fighters were not equipped with deflector shields. This is why most of them were hardened and ready to commit the ultimate sacrifice. Today, we review Havina Vonreg's half-scale bust from Gentle Giant Ltd as seen in the "Squadrons" video game. My name is Dominic K Lordo, and you are watching Star Wars Artifacts.

This half-scale bust is part of the "Legends in 3D" series from Diamond Select Toys. Information about the quantity was contradictory; on the Gentle Giant website, it is indicated that it is limited to an edition of 500 pieces, but on the box, the certificate of authenticity, and under the statue, it states a limited edition of 1,000 pieces. After double-checking with a friend at Gentle Giant Ltd, it was confirmed that it is limited to an edition of 1,500 pieces since it was a web exclusive. As of the day this video was filmed, it was still available on the company’s website for $ 175, 240 Canadian dollars, or 140 British pounds. Are you ready? Punch it!

    Packaging

On the front of the box, there is a picture of the bust, and below that, gold writing identifies it as the Havina Vonreg half-scale resin bust. At the top, a gray stripe reads "Exclusive 2020". Both left and right sides are identical, showing the "Legends in 3D" series logo and the character's name. On the back, we have the Star Wars logo and a short paragraph that goes like this: "Havina Vonreg is fueled by rage. Her brothers were killed by a rebel attack, she lost trusted squadmates at Endor, and she has seen friends slink away to the Rebellion, betraying the Empire. She fights for no more. Now, Vonreg is an Unleashed Fury in the cockpit, battling Rebels with the fervor of a woman who has nothing to lose."

    Detailed Review

As indicated on the box, the bust is made of resin. It is 10 inches tall, has a shoulder width of 6.5 inches, and a depth of about 5.5 inches with the atmospheric control box. It weighs approximately 5.5 lbs. It was designed by Joe Allard and sculpted by Olaf Ark Vixen.

This bust represents a character from the "Squadrons" video game, so don’t be surprised if you didn’t know the character before watching this review. This is why the Star Wars Gaming Greats Seal was placed on the box. The sculpt is the same as for the TIE Fighter pilot half-scale bust; however, some slight modifications were made in the paint application on certain elements. It is easy to see the red paint that was applied on the frontal portion; this is a customization made by the character. Other modifications include:

    • The teeth are gray instead of black.
    • The portion located on the mouth is also gray instead of black like the one on the original bust.
    • At the chest level, we can count seven red bars on each side.
    • The Imperial cog decals on Vonreg's helmet were applied a little bit lower than they were on the regular pilot helmet.

If we take a general look at the helmet, we can see that the sculpt was well-made and all the important details are present such as the silver discs on the ears and the famous peel box located behind the helmet. The atmospheric control box located on both pilot's chest also features their share of differences:

    • The three buttons located in the square on the left side don't have the same color. In the middle, the button is gray instead of blue.
    • On the right, they added a red dot on both gray buttons.
    • The portion around the little gear is black instead of gray.

As previously mentioned in my regular TIE Fighter pilot half-scale bust review, more details in the texture of both shoulders would have been appreciated to better render the pilot suit. However, the pilot's armor is well-sculpted. The base was not modified; it likely represents the portion of the fighter on which the lateral panels are attached and features some nice circuit details. Below the base, we can see the copyright, the name of the manufacturer, the location where it was made as well as the number of the piece. I own number 246 of the edition. Each bust of the series comes with a certificate of authenticity, which also includes the number of the piece.

Whether you’re a fan of the "Squadrons" video game or anything related to pilots, the Vonreg half-scale bust is a piece you'll probably consider adding to your collection. I chose to display it with the regular TIE Fighter pilot half-scale bust to create my own squad. I would like to thank Gentle Giant Ltd for sending me this piece for review purposes. What do you think of this bust? Did you enjoy playing the "Squadrons" video game? Let me know in the comments section below. If you had a great time watching this review, please consider giving us a super thanks. This will allow us to keep offering you new content on a regular basis. I'll see you soon for another review, and until then, may the Force be with you always.
