    Introduction

    Are You in a Simulation?

Probably. I was pondering this question on a flight the other day. While 30,000 feet in the air, I looked out over the vast beautiful landscape and thought, "Man, the rendering speed on this thing is incredible." So, I decided to try and visualize it. Luckily, I had a whole row to myself, so I propped up my phone in the window using my passport and pretended to act intrigued by something outside.

    Step 1: Gathering Resources

To begin with, I downloaded a bunch of clips from the stock footage tab. These included clouds, birds, network shapes, computer code, and a good base environment to build up the shot from.

Step 2: Creating the Glitch Effect

First, I imported a photo of just green and a photo of an element—specifically, a white cloud. I clicked the transition tab between the two clips, selected a glitch transition, and then exported the clip, importing it again into a separate project. On top of the base environment layer, I keyed out the green and used the screen blend mode to get rid of the black background, which left me with a cloud loading into the scene.

Step 3: Using Parallax for Movement

The next step was deciding how the element would move inside the shot. To do this, I used the idea of parallax. Imagine you are in a fast-moving car; the stuff closest to you appears to pass very quickly, while the stuff further away seems to move much slower. This principle applied to my project meant that the elements I wanted closer to the camera had to move across the frame much quicker than those I wanted further away.

I set a keyframe where I wanted the movement to start, scrubbed to the end, and repositioned the element far away, setting another keyframe and creating a motion path. For elements further away, I repositioned them not as far, which made them appear to move slower.

    Step 4: Adding Multiple Elements

I repeated the keyframing process multiple times with different objects, giving me more control over the effects taking place in the shot.

Step 5: Revealing Code with Masking

The final step involved erasing parts of the edge to reveal the code underneath. I clicked "mixer" on the environment layer stacked on top and then imported the code and shapes. I added a rectangular mask over the environment shot, feathered the edges, and keyframed it to slowly uncover the bottom layer over time. I also used the chroma key tools to selectively erase parts of the clouds to enhance the rendering effect of elements transitioning in and out of the scene.

    FAQ

Q1: What software was used to create this video?
A1: The video was created using Videoleap.

Q2: What is the parallax effect in video editing?
A2: The parallax effect simulates the varying speed of elements moving past a viewer's point of view, whereby closer elements appear to move faster than those further away.

Q3: How do you create a glitch transition in Videoleap?
A3: Import a green-colored photo and an element, apply a glitch transition between the two clips, and key out the green color to blend it with the base video.

Q4: What is the purpose of using masking in video editing?
A4: Masking is used to selectively reveal or hide parts of a video layer, allowing for creative transitions and effects.

Q5: How do you make clouds appear to move as part of the parallax effect?
A5: Set keyframes for the start and end positions of the clouds, adjusting the distance they move based on their perceived distance from the camera, with closer clouds moving more quickly across the frame.
