How to Make a Spotlight on Snapchat (Edit and Use Spotlights Tutorial)

Howto & Style

Introduction

Hey everyone, this is Grace from Kapung! In this article, I'm going to introduce you to Snapchat's newest feature called Spotlight. Spotlight is Snapchat's version of TikTok, where creators can make videos up to 60 seconds that show up in a feed within the app. To incentivize creators from the start, Snapchat is paying top viewed videos made by creators 16 and older from a fund of one million dollars every day through the end of 2020. I'll go over how to get the Spotlight feature, and then also how to make Spotlights so you can start earning that money. Let's get started!

Step 1: Update Your Snapchat App

To get Spotlights on your Snapchat app, you need to make sure that it's updated. Go to the app store on your phone, click your profile icon in the corner, and scroll down. If there's an update button next to the Snapchat symbol, click that.

Step 2: Accessing the Spotlight Reels

Head over to Snapchat. The tab all the way to the right is the Spotlight reels. This is similar to TikTok or Instagram Reels where there is a feed of vertical videos. You'll notice there are no comments or visible numbers associated with likes. Most videos will also have hashtags at the bottom, which can be clicked to see other content with that hashtag.

Step 3: Making Your Spotlight Video

All Spotlight videos must be 60 seconds or less. There are two main ways to make a video Spotlight in the app itself.

Using the Timeline Feature:

  1. Tap the timeline button on the screen. You'll notice a bar at the bottom of the screen enabling you to record multi-segment videos using the timeline.

  2. Record a segment, stop, change the view, and continue recording. This allows you to compile different segments into one video for Spotlight.

  3. Use the effects by clicking the effects tab. You can also add sounds while recording by clicking the add sound option.

  4. Once happy with your segments, click the check mark. Here, you can edit different segments, trim them, and add various Snapchat editing features like text, doodles, stickers, and sounds.

  5. After editing, click send to and select the Spotlight feature at the top. Add your hashtags and then click send. Your Spotlight will be posted and visible under your profile.

Using Videos from Your Camera Roll:

  1. Click the icon on the left to open your camera roll or other snaps and stories.

  2. Select a video and click the three dots in the top right corner, then click edit video.

  3. The selected video will appear in the editor. You can trim the video and add other elements before clicking send.

  4. Click Spotlight, add your hashtags, and then send.

Editing Outside of Snapchat

If you need to mix and edit multiple videos and images together or add any music, use Kapwing, an online video editor.

Using Kapwing:

  1. Click the first link in the description to get to Kapwing and start a new project.

  2. Add multiple videos and images by going to the scenes tab and uploading from your photo library.

  3. Edit the layers and adjust the timing of the images.

  4. Trim videos and make sure the size is 9x16 for vertical video format.

  5. Add text, overlays, audio, and other edits. Export the video once ready.

  6. Download the video to your camera roll and upload it to Snapchat from there.
