Hey there, it's your boy Dece FAS. Today, I'm going to walk you through a step-by-step guide on how to do a drop fade. Let's dive right into it.
To get started, you'll need the following tools:
This haircut typically takes between 25 to 45 minutes, depending on your experience and skill level.
The first step is to brush out the waves. Use a comb to comb the waves in the direction they grow. Then, take a one and a two guard, close the guard all the way, and knock down the waves according to the growth pattern.
I'm setting my first guideline with my zero grab trimmers. This creates my bald line, which slopes downwards towards the back for that drop fade look. Remember to make it even on both sides before connecting it to the back.
Next, I take my clipper lever all the way open with no guard and create a guideline about a finger’s width above the bald line. Keep this guideline in the same slope as the original bald line.
Using the three guard all the way closed, I go up to the parietal ridge area to debulk, ensuring I maintain the slanted downward motion of the clippers.
I use a one and a half guard, starting closed and then going halfway open before going fully open. This process helps blend into the three-guard length we established earlier.
I switch to the half guard to remove the visible line. Begin with it closed, then gradually open it up, flicking in the opposite direction of hair growth to blend properly.
With no guard on the lever, start with the lever closed and slowly open it halfway, then fully, flicking at the bottom line using the clipper's corners for precision.
Examining the fade in the mirror, I noticed some bulk at the top. Using a three guard, I debulked this area. I also employed thinning shears for shear-over-comb methods to fine-tune the blend.
Using a one and two guard, I trim the edges. Then, with a one guard fully open, tap the lineup area. Follow this with some alcohol to clean the surface and some holding spray to keep the hair in place.
After letting the holding spray settle, I begin the lineup, ensuring the hair is taut and in place.
My client likes enhancements, so I applied them lightly for a natural look. Lastly, I knocked off flyaways using my clipper lever all the way closed or with scissors, riding the top of the waves.

You will need clippers, trimmers, shears, a three guard, a 1 and 2 guard, a 0.5 guard, and a one guard for detailing.
Typically, it should take anywhere from 25 to 45 minutes, depending on your skill level and experience.
The first step is to brush and comb out the waves in the direction of growth and then cut the hair down with a one and two guard closed.
Ensure to check the level or position of the bald line on one side before connecting it to the back to make sure it’s even on both sides.
Debulking helps make it easier to fade into the area, leading to a more gradient blend.
By using a series of guards (starting with a one and a half guard) and progressively opening the clipper lever, ensuring to flick and go in the opposite direction of hair growth when necessary.
Prep the hairline by trimming it with a guard, applying alcohol to remove oils and sweat, and using holding spray to keep the hair in place before using the trimmers.
You can either lightly trim the top with clippers or shears to remove flyaways and keep the waves neat and tidy.
