I Spent Hundreds on Custom VRChat Avatars from Fiverr
Gaming
Introduction
Creating custom avatars for VRChat can be costly and time-consuming. Recently, I decided to test the waters by commissioning avatars at three different price points: $ 15, $ 60, and $ 150, to see how they would compare. Surprisingly, the most expensive one turned out to be the worst.
Overall, these avatars were not cheap to create. If you'd like to support my efforts, please like this article. It took over a month to finalize this video. Here are my experiences with each avatar.
The $ 15 Avatar
Finding a cheap avatar was challenging since most low-priced listings were for changes or updates to existing avatars. I found a $ 15 listing that included a full avatar design, rigging, and everything ready to go for VRChat.
Delivery and Results
The $ 15 avatar was simplistic and cartoony. Despite setting clear instructions, many couldn't apply to this avatar style. Here's the final product:
It's a fun, derpy avatar, albeit with some distortions at the back that I didn't catch until after the first revision. It has no special animations or extra features. It’s plain and simplistic, exactly what you can expect for $ 15.
The $ 60 Avatar
This was the hardest to select because $ 50 is the average price for most VRChat avatars. I chose an artist whose designs closely matched the anime aesthetic I desired. They convinced me to go for a $ 60 premium option, which included a more advanced avatar and extra outfits.
Delivery and Results
I was initially worried because one version looked very feminine, and they weren’t following my color instructions. However, the artist was very patient, and after some back-and-forth, we extended the due date. Eventually, I received a much better version:
Features
The avatar looked good overall and included different outfits:
- Hoodie with panda design
- Another custom hoodie
- Retro-looking shirt
Although the clothes aren’t super high-quality, the features make up for it.
Customization
One of my favorite features is the color customization of the hair and eyes.
Downsides
The only major downside is that the avatar isn’t optimized for VRChat on Quest. I tried to have it optimized by another artist but encountered issues.
The $ 150 Avatar
Now for the most expensive one, which turned out to be the worst and most frustrating experience. Here's how it looks:
Issues
- Creepy, deformed hands
- Disproportionate body
- Floppy hair dynamics
- No animations or additional features
Delivery Problems
The artist’s poor English comprehension made communication difficult. They didn’t start the order for weeks and then hastily delivered an unsatisfactory product. Requests for revisions resulted in the artist asking me to cancel the order.
Final Thoughts
Avoid this artist unless you speak fluent Spanish, as the language barrier was a significant problem. Unlike the mid-tier artist, they didn’t even attempt to resolve the issues.
Recommendation
For anyone looking for an affordable and quality VRChat avatar, I highly recommend HamsterShop. They were patient and willing to fix issues.
Need better recommendations? Some suggested contacting artists via VRChat Discord.
Conclusion
If you're planning to commission VRChat avatars, be wary of red flags like poor communication skills. You can get fantastic avatars at affordable prices, but make sure to find a reliable artist.
