It's been 10 years since the last Dragon Age game was released, and in 2024, we're finally getting a sequel. I decided to revisit 2014's Game of the Year, Dragon Age Inquisition, to see if it's still worth playing today. I’ll keep this review spoiler-free, but I do plan on doing a longer deep dive critique of the game later this year. So, be sure to subscribe if you're interested in seeing that. The TLDR is yes, I absolutely think Dragon Age Inquisition is worth playing today. It's far from a perfect game, but it has satisfying combat and tells an incredible story with some of my favorite characters in any RPG. But without further ado, let's buckle up, grab some iced coffee, and dive into Dragon Age Inquisition 10 years later.
One of the most important aspects of an RPG is having the latitude to create the exact character you want to roleplay as. Dragon Age Inquisition offers one of the most impressive character creators in the RPG genre, especially for its time. At the start, you can choose your character class, gender, and race. Though the character models look like they escaped from a wax museum, you get to pick from four different voice actors, providing additional options for your protagonist.
You can play as an elf, dwarf, human, or those big, horned Kunari. You’ll also choose from three character classes: Mage, Warrior, or Rogue. Later in the game, each class has three additional subclass specializations unlocked by completing progression quests. The one major gripe is the removal of the blood magic specialization for Mages.
The choices you make for race and class also assign you a basic background, adding a bit of flavor without much depth.
The combat in Dragon Age Inquisition is Real Time with Pause strategy combat. You control up to four characters and can pause the action to queue up abilities. Combat is centered on a mix of auto-attacks, abilities, and consumables like potions and bombs. Ability combos and understanding guard and barrier effects are key to effective combat.
For many Dragon Age fans, it's the writing, characters, and storytelling that provide the emotional hook. Inquisition has some of the best companions in the franchise, such as Dorian, Iron Bull, and Solas. There are nine companions and three advisors, with eight romance options among them. The approval system for companions is revamped to be less transparent, offering a more organic relationship-building process.
One cool thing about Dragon Age Inquisition is that you can import decisions from previous games. It offers big decisions with massive consequences, but the game somewhat spoils the outcomes by displaying a text box of anticipated consequences when you hover over options. Aside from quest choices, you also oversee the Inquisition's operations with War Table operations and Throne judgments, which enhance the feeling of being in charge.
The game's open-world zones, influenced by Skyrim and Far Cry 3, are gorgeous but lack substantial content. Most side quests are repetitive and uninspired, reducing the incentive to explore. High dragon fights are an exception, providing rewarding and fun combat experiences.
If you enjoy the base game, Dragon Age Inquisition has three major story expansions. "Trespasser" is a must-play, setting up the story for the next Dragon Age game. "Jaws of Hakkon" and "The Descent" are skippable unless you are a completionist.
Dragon Age Inquisition is definitely worth playing if you're a fan of RPGs or fantasy games. It has its flaws, but the strengths—satisfying combat, strong storytelling, and memorable characters—far outweigh the faults.
