Hello and welcome to Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital city and one of the most fascinating places I’ve ever had the pleasure to visit. There is such beauty here, whether it be from religious statues and temples, colonial-era buildings, or ultramodern landmarks with panoramic views of the city of over 2 million people. I love it.

Beginning the Journey

Today’s journey starts at Fort Railway Station, the main hub of the Sri Lankan Railway Network. The whole place is a throwback to the early 20th-century English railways, and that’s definitely not a bad thing. Here, you can find staff ticket counters to either book or get online tickets printed as we did today. There’s also a dedicated English-speaking tourist office just outside if you need a bit of extra help. On the platforms, you’ll find shops and food outlets to grab snacks before heading out on your journey.

The Blue Train Experience

Here’s our train for today, a Sri Lankan Railways class S12 diesel multiple unit, affectionately known by locals as the “Blue Train.” Delivered in 2012, these Chinese-built eight-coach sets have a top speed of 100 km/h and a power output of 1,450 KW. They have three classes of travel and a total capacity of 426 passengers.

This train will take us to Kandy, where we’ll explore the beautiful city and then continue to Ella. Boarding is not accessible for disabled passengers, and there are no accessible facilities onboard. We’ll be traveling in first class today, featuring air conditioning and seating in a 2 plus 2 configuration.

Journey to Kandy

We set off six minutes late at 10:41 a.m. on this Inter-City Express service. The first leg from Colombo to Kandy is 121 km and is scheduled to take 3 hours and 25 minutes. The full route from Colombo to Ella spans 284 km, with the fastest service completing the journey in 9 hours. This line is very much not about the speed!

The fare from Colombo to Kandy is 1,500 Sri Lankan rupees for first class on this regular service. Second class is 1,200 rupees and third class is 900 rupees. All first-class coaches are air-conditioned, while all second and third-class coaches are not, except for the first-class observation car available on selected services.

Kandy: A Gateway to Further Adventure

We arrive in Kandy, a city with 125,000 residents, a stunning Central Province capital, and home to historically enriched heritage, such as the Tranquil Lake and the UNESCO World Heritage Temple of the Tooth. After spending a couple of relaxing days here, we return to Kandy station for the final leg to Ella.

Ella Awaits

Our train from Colombo to Badulla arrives, this time a Chinese-built class S14. We board and settle into our reserved second-class seats, ready to experience more breathtaking views, passing through luscious green jungles, hillside tea plantations, and the striking Central Highlands.

Second Class: The Best Viewing Experience

The second class is decidedly preferable for photographers and enthusiasts alike, with large, fully opening windows providing an unfettered view of the stunning scenery. The journey is not complete without a visit to the famous Nine Arch Bridge, a picturesque spot not far from Ella.
