He asked us, "Do you know any patients who could benefit from this?" That email was the catalyst for Fatima and me to start talking about this project and get it off the ground.

Fatima and I had a whirlwind week. We got access to the technology, and I spent the weekend experimenting with it. I uploaded a sample, and it recreated my voice. We then discussed what type of patient would make sense for trying this technology. That's how we thought of Lexi.

Lexi, a 21-year-old with a vascular brain tumor compressing her brain stem, underwent a 10-hour surgery. When in the Pediatric ICU, she was intubated but still texting. This strong desire to communicate inspired us to approach her to see if she'd be interested in trying the new technology.

Lexi, a patient with a brain tumor, became the project's first user. A 15-second audio sample from a past school project was used to recreate her voice, enabling her to communicate via a bespoke mobile app.
