We received an email from James Donovan from the Strategic Partnership team at OpenAI. He connected the dots in terms of our idea and this new emerging technology in the company. He asked us, "Do you know any patients who could benefit from this?" That email was the catalyst for Fatima and me to start talking about this project and get it off the ground.
Fatima and I had a whirlwind week. We got access to the technology, and I spent the weekend experimenting with it. I uploaded a sample, and it recreated my voice. We then discussed what type of patient would make sense for trying this technology. That's how we thought of Lexi.
Lexi, a 21-year-old with a vascular brain tumor compressing her brain stem, underwent a 10-hour surgery. When in the Pediatric ICU, she was intubated but still texting. This strong desire to communicate inspired us to approach her to see if she'd be interested in trying the new technology.
Welcome to another episode of NJM AI Grand Rounds. I'm Rajan Ry, and we're delighted today to bring you our episode with Dr. Rohaid Ali and Dr. Fatima Mirza. Dr. Rohaid Ali is a neurosurgery resident at Brown University, and Dr. Fatima Mirza is a Dermatology resident, also at Brown University. This episode features our first wife and husband duo on the podcast and our first episode with two residents joining us together as guests.
During the podcast, the strength of their collaboration was evident. We discussed their study on surgical consent forms, where they used ChatGPT to simplify consent forms in Rhode Island. Another project involved helping a young patient who lost her voice due to a brain tumor using an AI model to create a custom voice for a text-to-speech model.
Fatima and Rohaid spoke about their journey. Rohaid grew up in Oklahoma, went to Penn, and then Stanford for medical school before landing at Brown for residency. He emphasized that marriage and his relationship with Fatima has significantly shaped his journey, both personally and professionally.
Fatima always knew she wanted to be a doctor and was deeply interested in medical communications. She started with a degree at Harvard, moved to England for a Master's in Public Health, and then went to Yale for medical school.
Both discovered the powers of AI while preparing for their board exams. Fatima envisioned AI's potential to help patients by simplifying complex medical messages. Rohaid wondered about the grade-level of the consent forms patients were asked to sign.
The consent form study involved analyzing consent forms from 15 academic medical centers and finding their average grade level to be a college sophomore. Using ChatGPT, they simplified the forms to the average American reading level, preserving content while making them more understandable.
The form was then approved by multiple stakeholders, including medical malpractice attorneys and hospital leadership, and rolled out at the largest healthcare system in Rhode Island, benefiting over 40,000 procedures annually.
The voice recovery project began after OpenAI noticed their work with ChatGPT. They connected the couple with a new emerging technology—Voice Engine. Lexi, a patient with a brain tumor, became the project's first user. A 15-second audio sample from a past school project was used to recreate her voice, enabling her to communicate via a bespoke mobile app.
The podcast concluded with fun segments where Fatima and Rohaid answered questions about each other, showing their deep understanding and alignment.
Fatima and Rohaid advised other early-career doctors to surround themselves with diverse thinkers, seek fantastic mentors, and integrate AI thoughtfully into their workflows.
