NEW YORK CITY LIVE WALKING SHOW | September 5th, 2024 | Lost My MetroCard | I'm So Stupid
Education
Introduction
Ladies and gentlemen, let me share an unfortunate experience that happened recently while I was out in New York City. As I was navigating my day, I encountered some issues and learned some valuable lessons.
I was going about my business in Dumbo when I was confronted by a group of migrants on mopeds. It was alarming to see people trying to rob others in broad daylight; I even fell victim to a robbery just the night before. These times are tough, and it seems like the streets are becoming increasingly dangerous.
While I was traveling, I somehow lost my MetroCard—more specifically, my Army-issued MetroCard. The day started with me either hopping onto the A or D train, but somewhere along the way, my card slipped from my back pocket. The last time I distinctly remember having it was right after I arrived in Long Island City. Despite my frantic search around the area, I couldn't find it.
While trying to locate the lost card, I visited a public storage facility. The attendant noticed my frustration and we ended up talking about my lost card. Thankfully, I managed to report it lost, and I'm waiting to see if MTA can help locate it. Given that the card had an unlimited pass, I want to ensure no one else is using it inappropriately.
Amid this chaos, I was also looking forward to my appointments for the day. I went to an agency seeking to hire people to take care of pets while their owners are away. They conduct background checks and require pet care experience, which I have. Having owned several pets in my life, I believe I can meet their requirements. This job could provide me with a little revenue, especially since I need to purchase winter attire.
The agency informed me that if accepted, I would be responsible for caring for various animals, ensuring their needs were met as per the owner's specifications. That's something I can get behind! I also took advantage of my photography skills, as there's a need for someone who can take quality pictures of pets.
After that, my day spiraled into a series of unexpected turns, including a visit to the courthouse regarding some outstanding paperwork and another application submission—just a busy day navigating city life. Unfortunately, I still had to strategize ways to deal with the lost MetroCard situation.
At the end of the day, I had to retrieve some food I ordered for myself, which I was now unsure of how to pick up without a MetroCard. I faced various options on whether to hop the train to get my food or cancel the order altogether. The stress of potentially getting ticketed weighed heavily on my mind as police were actively monitoring the subway stations to catch fare evaders.
In the meantime, while struggling through this, I thought about community resources. The city has a sparse network of community refrigerators for those in need. However, the reliability of these resources varies significantly, making it challenging to count on them when times are hard.
In closing, despite my hectic day and the unfortunate loss of my MetroCard, I'm optimistic about the job opportunity with the pet-care agency, and I'm hoping to sort out the transportation issue soon. I appreciate everyone who’s been following along with my experiences in New York City.
