Next-gen is a Netflix original animated movie based on the popular Chinese comic book Seven Seven to Three. John Krasinski stars along with Jason Sudeikis, Michael Peña, and Charlene Yi in this film. We follow Mei, a rebellious student who comes from a broken home and forms an unexpected friendship with a top-secret, weaponized robot. Together, they fight off bullies in a high-tech city of the future and expose the evil plot of a corporate tech tycoon.
I had no idea what to expect from this film, mostly because there aren't many Netflix original animated movies on the streaming service. However, I'm very happy to say this movie is surprisingly good. The CG art design is like a cross between the animated movies Coraline and Big Hero 6. While the voice performances are pretty solid, the action sequences stand out as incredible, offering some of the most visually stunning scenes I've ever seen in an animated movie.
On the downside, I felt the movie was slightly too long with a runtime of an hour and 45 minutes. There are a few scenes that could have easily been cut without hurting the overall story.
Overall, Next-gen is a fun animated adventure that the entire family will enjoy. It's full of thrills, heart, and even a few surprises, making it a worthwhile watch.
