Ring modulation (RM) is a unique audio effect that can yield a wide range of sonic textures. If you have a shifter device, you'll find a ring modulator built inside, which allows you to create sounds that vary from the subtly interesting to the outright weird. Here's a basic rundown:

When you use RM, you have a modulator frequency—often a sine wave—that interacts with your original signal (the carrier). Unlike simple volume modulation, RM retains the essence of both the carrier and the modulator and sums their frequencies, creating an intriguing blend of sounds.
