Introduction

Welcome one and all, both here and out there all around the world, to The Late Show. I'm your host, Stephen Colbert. As you might have noticed thanks to the legally required Chiron below, we are coming to you live on the first night of the Republican National Convention. For what was predicted as a boring rematch, things have been downright crazy. It feels like if you fall asleep for a second, you'll miss some insane twist in this election. Fortunately, this election has made it basically impossible to fall asleep ever again.

Venue and Watch Party

This year's convention takes place in beautiful Milwaukee, Wisconsin, also known as Brew City, Beer City, and all the other cities are worried about you city. If you're in Milwaukee and can't get into the convention, there's an official convention watch party every day this week at a local pub called, and this is true, Drink Wisconsinbly. Truly, one of the best state-themed warning label bars in the country, right up there with the Philadelphia pub, Do Not Consume Alcohol If You Are Pennsylvanian or Planning to Become Pennsylvanian.

Security Concerns and Odd Regulations

Despite the shocking attack on Saturday, RNC organizers insisted that the convention wouldn’t just proceed but would continue with a vengeance. Though ideally, I wish things could continue with a bong hit, a pint of Ben & Jerry's, and reruns of the Gilmore Girls. Speakers have been advised to leave their speeches unchanged but also encouraged to dial down the rhetoric.

When it comes to security, however, there's an odd Wisconsin law. Guns will still be allowed near the RNC, but tennis balls will not. This means if you're an elderly Republican, the front legs of your walker will be raw dogging it, leading to some discomfort.

Wisconsin Senator's Comment on Safety

According to Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson, Wisconsin only produces the nicest people, like Tony Shalhoub, Chris Farley, and Jeffrey Dahmer. The first order of business at any convention is the roll call of the states casting votes for the nominee. When it was Kentucky’s turn, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell got a rousing welcome that almost unified everyone in their reaction.

Speaker Mishaps

When House Speaker Mike Johnson took the stand, his introduction of the Attorney General was fraught with technical difficulties. Did he really need a teleprompter to say a person's name? It's so embarrassing for Mike.

Tonight's convention theme was "Make America Wealthy Once Again," though the headline speakers included Marjorie Taylor Greene, who stated, "Donald John Trump is the leader America deserves," and Michigan Congressman John James, among others. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem also delivered notable speeches on personal history and economic success in their states.

Benedictions and Culinary Contributions

A Lutheran Minister concluded the evening with a benediction, humorously beginning with “You’re going to be so blessed.” Additionally, the CEO of Goya Foods, Bob Unanue, also spoke and generously provided free beans to all speakers.
