Opening Hymn
Good morning and welcome to St. Patrick's Cathedral. Today is the memorial of St. Apollinaris, Bishop, and Martyr. Our celebrant this morning is Father Salvo, and this mass is being offered for the repose of the soul of Raphael Palaos.
Let us sing together the first verse of our entrance hymn, which can be found in your blue St. Michael's Hymnal, number 418, "All People That on Earth Do Dwell," number 418. Please stand.
Hymn Lyrics:
All people that on Earth do dwell,
Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice,
Him serve with merry, his praise forth tell,
Come ye before Him and rejoice.
Introductory Rites
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you.
Dear sisters and brothers, as we begin these sacred mysteries, let us first call to mind our sins and ask our Lord to grant us His peace, His mercy, and His forgiveness.
Penitential Act:
Lord Jesus, you came to heal the contrite of heart, Lord have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
You came to call sinners to yourself, Christ have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us, Lord have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.
Opening Prayer
Let us pray.
Direct your faithful, Lord, in the way of eternal salvation, which the Bishop St. Apollinaris showed by his teaching and martyrdom, and grant through his intercession that we may so persevere in keeping your commandments as to merit being crowned with him. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
Liturgy of the Word
First Reading: A reading from the Book of the Prophet Micah.
Woe to those who plan iniquity
and work out evil on their couches;
In the morning light, they accomplish it
when it lies within their power.
They covet fields and seize them;
houses, and they take them;
They cheat an owner of his house,
a man of his inheritance.
Therefore thus says the Lord:
Behold, I am planning against this race
an evil from which you shall not withdraw your necks;
Nor shall you walk with head high,
for it will be a time of evil.
The word of the Lord.
Responsorial Psalm:
Do not forget the poor, O Lord.
Why, O Lord, do you stand aloof?
Why hide in times of distress?
Proudly the wicked harass the afflicted,
who are caught in the devices the wicked have contrived.
Do not forget the poor, O Lord.
Gospel Acclamation:
Alleluia, alleluia.
God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ
and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.
Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Reading: A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
The Pharisees went out and took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.
When Jesus realized this, he withdrew from that place.
Many people followed him, and he cured them all,
but he warned them not to make him known.
This was to fulfill what had been spoken through Isaiah the prophet:
Behold, my servant whom I have chosen,
my beloved in whom I delight;
I shall place my Spirit upon him,
and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.
He will not contend or cry out,
nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets.
A bruised reed he will not break,
a smoldering wick he will not quench,
until he brings justice to victory.
And in his name, the Gentiles will hope.
The Gospel of the Lord.
