Talking Yugioh: A Disappointing Start to NAWCQ Weekend

Well, here I am still in Pittsburgh, on a Friday morning, when my flight should be taking off in 8 minutes. Unfortunately, my flight got canceled due to a software issue with Microsoft or whatever it was. So, I will not be attending the NAWCQ this year, which is pretty disappointing. This was my first year getting an invite, and it's one of my initial competitive years. I was really excited to attend Nationals just once. I’ll have to try and get it again next year, but it’s okay; I will not give up.

The cancellation is particularly frustrating because I went out of my way to acquire all the Fiend Smith cards for a competitive deck. Now, I’ve taken a bit of a financial loss. When my flight got canceled, my options were either to pay $ 500 one way for a Southwest Airlines flight to Austin, which would have gotten me there today and then potentially pay another $ 500 for the return flight, totaling a $ 1,000 risk. The other option was to drive. From Pittsburgh to Austin, it's a 21-hour drive. A couple of people chose that route, and I just hope they get there safely. But for me, the extra $ 1,000 wasn't worth it, and I didn’t want to make that long drive. I wouldn't have gotten any sleep and would have been too tired to play properly.

In terms of expenses, I paid $ 300 for the now-canceled flights, $ 450 for my hotel for three nights, and a considerable amount for the Fiend Smith cards. I’m currently looking at a $ 1,000 loss, though hopefully, the $ 300 for the flights will be refunded. The Fiend Smith cards aren't a total loss; they're the best engine in Yu-Gi-Oh, and I wanted to pick them up anyway. The main loss is the non-refundable hotel booking.

Despite this, I will be watching the tournament this weekend and rooting for my friends who made it down. I plan to show my Deck Profile in a separate, more upbeat video because I put a lot of thought and testing into my list. I want to share that work with you all. For the record, I was going to play Fiend Smith Ubell, and I was ready to go.

Looking ahead, there are other YCS events, like one in Niagara, only a 4-hour drive from me. I’m looking forward to that unless something comes up. I also have other decks I want to build and test, like Plunder Patrol Fiend Smith and Chimera Illusion Fiend Smith. Last weekend during a sneak peek, I picked up several notable cards, spending a net of $ 330 on trades, pulls, and entry packs.

Since I won’t be at the NAWCQ, I'll create more content, including a Ubell Deck Profile and some Fiend Smith combos. I’ve wanted to make these videos but was focused on tournament prep. Now that I have time, I can share some Ubell-Fiend Smith combos and profiles.

So, that’s it for now. Sometimes, you just have to take the loss and move on. There wasn't anything anyone could have done about this—it was an act of God type of situation. Hopefully, I’ll be back next year. Let me know what you think, and we’ll catch up soon.
