Exploring Manhattan Beach

Coming off weeks of driving a gas car, I was eager to get back into the FSD mode. We set our initial destination to El Porto for some hypothetical surfing. As we maneuvered through some tricky streets and made our way to El Porto, Tesla Vision showcased some impressive slow-speed maneuvers.

It turned out that Future Rama King had been considering upgrading to the new Model 3 but held off because of financial priorities. His insight on Tesla’s value in stock shares was enlightening. Speaking of the new Model 3, it certainly stirred some envy due to its appealing design updates.

Observations on FSD in California

California driving, especially in beach cities, has its own rhythms. FSD handled traffic and road conditions well, though it remains a bit twitchy in certain scenarios. For someone new to FSD, the transition can be slightly nerve-wracking, especially when you’re used to human driving quirks.

We noted a few peculiarities. The Model 3 we were in still had some old habits like recognizing roads as 25 mph zones when they clearly are not. Despite this, the FSD felt confident overall and provided a smoother ride than expected.

The Scenic Routes

Driving through El Porto towards El Segundo offered stunning views of the ocean and mountains. With FSD engaged, the car showed remarkable decision-making skills, even in tight spots and busy intersections. El Porto, famous for its surf breaks, looked inviting for surfing, though parking remains a challenge as always.

Navigating through El Segundo and other parts of Los Angeles, the FSD managed construction zones, four-way stops, and unprotected left turns remarkably well. Though there were moments of hesitation, it never jeopardized safety. The blue pedestrian visualization was particularly noteworthy, even identifying cyclists and scooters effectively.

Into Play Del Rey

We then guided the FSD into some complex, narrower streets of Playa Del Rey. These beachside neighborhoods with their characteristic road quirks tested FSD’s capability further. It faced situations like maneuvering around parked cars and gauging pedestrian movements accurately.

Though the navigation system occasionally attempted impractical routes or U-turns, the car’s decision-making process and reactions were mostly commendable. Instances like backing out when faced with obstructions showcased the adaptability of the Tesla system.

Final Observations

Throughout our journey, whether dealing with complicated beach town streets or busy intersections, FSD has shown substantial improvements over the years. It showcases how far the technology has come while keeping safety paramount.
