Introduction

Hey everyone, my name is Eddie Scott, also known as Sailors, and I am the co-founder of Sailors Lifestyle, a clothing brand I started with my cousin during the quarantine of 2020. Over the past two years, we’ve grown our brand into a six-figure business with over half a million followers on TikTok. In this post, I’ll share with you valuable insights from our growth journey to help you build your brand. Let’s get right into it!

TikTok's Power for Exposure

In today’s digital age, TikTok is an incredible platform to gain exposure for your brand. The algorithm has evolved over time, but it remains a great tool for organic reach. You can start with zero followers, post a good video, and wake up the next morning with a thousand followers and 100K views. However, how much money can you actually make from having hundreds of thousands of followers on TikTok?

Our TikTok Journey

We started our TikTok page a few months after launching our brand. Initially, we were still figuring out our niche, trying to get views by emulating trending videos. However, we soon realized that to go viral, we needed to stop trying to go viral. Content engagement relies on the value provided, whether it’s through entertainment, education, or inspiration.

As soon as we shifted to creating motivational content aligned with our brand message, our follower count surged. From 2,000 followers, a motivational post took us to 10K in one day, and within a week, we had 100K followers. Over time, we amassed over 500,000 followers and multiple videos with millions of views. But how much did we earn from all of this?

Earnings from the TikTok Creator Fund

With over 500,000 followers, we were eligible for TikTok's Creator Fund. After meeting the requirements of having over 10,000 followers, 10K views in the past 30 days, and being over 18 years old, we started getting paid. TikTok pays creators through the Creator Fund which is akin to YouTube’s monetization program but pays significantly less.

Detailed Breakdown

We made a total of $ 817.87 with 500,000 followers. Payments varied daily, with some days as high as $ 46 and most days around $ 12 to $ 14. To give you context, TikTok pays around 2 to 4 cents per 1,000 views. For a video with 1 million views, you would earn about $ 40. In comparison, YouTube pays $ 5 to $ 18 per 1,000 views, which translates to roughly $ 5,000 for a 1 million view video.

Monetization Strategy for TikTok

If you plan to make money on TikTok, do not rely solely on the Creator Fund. Instead, use TikTok to drive traffic to your online store or personal brand. For example, if you have a $ 50 hoodie, a viral TikTok promoting that hoodie can generate substantial sales, far more than what the Creator Fund would offer.

By driving traffic from a 1 million view TikTok video to your online store, even with a small conversion rate, you can earn significantly more than through TikTok’s direct payouts.

Conclusion

TikTok is a fantastic platform for exposure, but don’t rely on it for direct income. Use it to build an audience and drive traffic to your online store or other revenue streams.
