Transitions Tutorial | Videoleap x Hallie Tut

Creating visually stunning video transitions can transform your content from mundane to marvelous. In this tutorial, I’ll guide you step by step on how I created this endless eye transition using Videoleap.

    Step 1: Shooting the Footage

First, I needed to capture two separate shots in different locations.

    1. Shot 1: I recorded myself in my room, dramatically falling backwards onto my bed.
    2. Shot 2: I filmed myself in the street with the camera starting far away and gradually moving closer to me. This second clip will be edited to appear sped up later.

    Step 2: Editing with Videoleap

    1. Import Clips: I imported both clips into a new Videoleap project. I trimmed and split them at the desired starting points, discarding any unnecessary footage.
    2. Sped Up Second Clip: For the second clip, I used the speed tool to increase the speed to its maximum setting.
    3. Reversing First Clip: For the first clip where I fall backwards, I reversed it to create a quick upwards motion.
    4. Zoom Animation: I used the keyframe tool to create a subtle zoom animation in the first clip. I set a keyframe at the start of the clip, then another at the end, zooming in slightly.
    5. Freeze Frame: At the end of the zoom animation, I used the freeze tool to create a still image, trimming it to just under a second in length.
    6. Circular Masking: I navigated to the mixer tool to bring this still image clip up to a new layer. Then, I used the mask tool to select a circular mask, inverted it, and positioned it over the pupil of my eye.
    7. Keyframe Adjustment: I added a keyframe at the beginning of the clip and zoomed all the way into the eye by the end of the clip, ensuring that only the bottom layer was visible. I further adjusted the animation to ensure the eye stayed centered in the frame by adding multiple keyframe markers.

    Step 3: Finalizing the Transition

    1. Second Clip Zoom Animation: I repeated the zoom animation process for the second clip using keyframes.
    2. Creating Seamless Loop: Using the freeze tool again, I created another still clip and brought it up to the mixer layer. I split the first few seconds of this clip and placed it under the last clip in the timeline.
    3. Additional Circular Masking: I applied another circular mask to the pupil, replicating the zoom-in effect with keyframes until the bottom layer was visible.

When played back in a loop, these steps create a seamless and engaging endless eye transition.

Q4: How does the circular mask contribute to the transition?
A4: The circular mask isolates the pupil, allowing the transition to zoom into the eye seamlessly, creating the looping effect.

Q5: Can this transition be customized for different effects or locations?
