Video Editing for Beginners (Instagram & TikTok) | Greg Kata | Videoleap Creator Workshop
Film & Animation
Introduction
Hello everyone! My name is Greg Kata, and I am a content creator specializing in observational humor about my everyday life as a teacher and a resident of New Orleans. One of the questions I get asked most frequently is how I edit my videos. When I started creating content, I had no editing background, and I was equally terrified of technology as I sometimes was of my kindergarten students. If I can figure this out, so can you!
In this workshop, I'll give you a peek behind the curtain of my editing process and show you just how easy it can be. You just need the right tools, and I will walk you through them step by step. Think of this as "editing for beginners." My hope is that by the end of this guide, you'll feel more confident about shooting your content without any stress about how to edit it all together. So, let’s get started!
Getting Started with Video Editing
Choosing the Right Editing Tool
First things first, you'll need a good editing tool. I use the app Videoleap by Lighttricks to edit my videos, which is available on both iOS and Android devices. I find it to be high-quality and, most importantly, user-friendly. Download the app and create an account to start editing.
As a thank you for joining this workshop, Videoleap is offering a new user promo—don't forget to check it out!
Importing Video Clips
Once you've downloaded the app, you should see it on your home screen. Tap the app icon to launch it, which will take you to the main menu. Videoleap has many functions, but for today, we'll focus on just a few key features.
Tap the red plus sign in the middle of the screen to access your library of clips, which will be pulled directly from your phone. Highlight the clips you want to use in your project and then tap the "add to project" button.
Your selected clips will download and appear in order in the Videoleap interface.
Basic Editing Techniques
To see how our clips look when unedited, simply play them back.
Next, we want to edit the beginning and end of each clip to remove any unnecessary dead air. Moving back to the home screen will allow you to highlight each clip and edit as needed.
Editing Clips:
- Highlight a clip.
- Use the sliding tab to adjust the start and end points, or play the clip and pause it where you want to make edits.
- To split a clip, press the "split clip" tool (it looks like a square with a line through it). This will divide the clip at your chosen point.
- Highlight and delete any excess clips by dragging them to the trash.
Repeat this process for all clips in your video to create a seamless flow. Since engagement drops with too much dead air, quick transitions will keep your audience hooked.
Adding Music and Text
Adding Music
After trimming your clips, it’s time to add some audio. Click on the audio button, then select "music" to pull up various music options. Choose a track that fits your video and ensure it covers the entire length of your content.
Adjust the music volume as needed; you want it to complement your voiceover without overpowering it. Always check the final mix to ensure everything sounds balanced.
Adding Text
Finally, to add some text to your video, select the text button, double-tap the appearing text box, and type in your desired message (e.g., "Editing for Beginners"). You can adjust the size and position of the text in your video, and choose how long you want it to appear before saving your project.
Saving Your Final Video
When you're ready to save, click "export" in the upper right corner. Choose your desired video quality (720p is usually sufficient for social media), and your video will save to your photo album. Success!
You now have your finished product.
